What is EDM?
EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is an umbrella term that refers to a wide variety of similar (but not identical) music genres. The music almost always has a repetitive percussion track and typically includes a melody played by a synthesizer laid over the drumming.
Where did EDM come from?
The first ancestor of modern dance music was likely the music of disco artist Giorgio Moroder. Other examples of early EDM-style pieces include the electronic music of Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra. All of these artists were working in the late 1970s, when the popularity of disco music was about to see a sharp decline.
After the virtual death of disco, the early 1980s were used as a time of musical experimentation for those looking to make new dance music. Over time, more and more synthesizers and drum tracks came into play, eventually becoming the various genres of EDM we know today.
What are the genres of EDM?
As we mentioned, there are a number of music genres that fall under the EDM category but these are the main three sub-genres:
House Music — This type of music typically includes mid-tempo percussion, lots of shuffling hi-hats, jazzy keyboards, and tropical sounds such as congas, timbales, and horns. House music gives off a warm sort of vibe and generally adds a positive feeling to the room.
Techno Music — Some might describe techno as cold or mechanical—quite the opposite of the warm house music discussed above. It includes plenty of experimental sounds and strives to give off a futuristic feel much of the time.
Trance Music — Trance music is, as the name suggests, a hypnotic genre of music. It is very focused on the build-up and break-down of the song, making the melody the focus.
How can I learn to play EDM?
To begin with, you’ll need to learn the basics of music. Some of the most important elements of EDM include the rhythms and basic chord progressions. Fortunately, all of these things and more can be learned right here at Musical U.
The next step is to find a good digital audio workstation, also known as a DAW. Essentially, this is the software you’ll use to build your music and the most important tool for creating your art. A good DAW will likely cost a bit of money, but will include some synths and drum samples to get you started.
Equipped with the basics of music and a good DAW, you’re ready to begin experimentation. Watch YouTube videos, gather all the knowledge you can, listen to your favorite electronic dance music, and play with your workstation as much as possible. The more you immerse yourself and focus on your music, the better you’ll become.
EDM is interesting and exciting for both the audience and the musician. Therefore, it’s a great style of music to pick up, especially if you want to stay active in the party scene.
A BRIEF HISTORY OF ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC (EDM)
Have you been witness to the increase in the electronic dance music scene? Are you wondering how and when EDM became so popular? While EDM, and its many musical genres, may seem new, it’s actually been around since the 1970’s, developing over the years as a symbol of contemporary culture. For decades, the music industry has been providing energy-charged electronic music to raving crowds. But before we recognized these dance parties as “raves” as we do today, we simply called them discos.
WHAT IS ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC?
Electronic Dance Music is a compilation of electronic music subgenres that are intended for crowds of dancers, including disco music, synthpop, techo, house music, trance music, drum and bass, dubstep, trap, hardstyle and more. With such a wide range of sounds, it would seem impossible that all of this could, at the same time, be classified as EDM, but these subgenres have developed over the course of the last few decades, informing and transforming out of a progressive dance culture. When you hear EDM today, it’s a much different experience than what listeners of electronic dance music would have heard in the 1970’s, ’80’s, ‘90’s, or even early 2000’s, and its progression as a recognizable genre can be mapped out by understanding when its subgenres were popularized as forms of dance music.
POPULAR EDM GENRES THROUGH THE YEARS
1970’S DISCO AND SYNTHPOP ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC
The beginning of EDM can from the disco genre, heavily popular in the late 1970’s. Disco music aimed to move crowds of people on the dancefloor, using drum machines and electronic instruments to create synthesized rhythms. Popular disco music that helped to create the EDM scene included Donna Summer’s 1977 synthesized disco hit “I Feel Love,” which was written by Pete Bellotte and Giorgio Moroder, who would later collaborate with Daft Punk; and the 1974 hit “Rock Your Baby,” by George McCrae, which used a drum machine and Roland rhythm machine.
SYNTHPOP, POST-DISCO AND ELECTRO MUSIC OF THE 1980’S
Synth music, or synthpop, was developed alongside house music and electro music during the “post-disco” era in the ‘80’s. Music of this era began to be known and produced in the mainstream music industry in Europe as electronic dance music became more sophisticated and robust with technological advancements. Drum machines and synthesizers were used more heavily after the disco days, but these electronic music makers were joined by innovations like MIDIt, which revolutionized the way electronic instruments could communicate. Paired with the use of computers, electronic music took off as an accessible art form that could be replicated and transformed by anyone with musical experience and a computer. Music produced during this time included hits like a-ha’s “Take On Me” and the song that would come to be recognized as one of the first – if not the first – house records, “On and On,” by Jesse Saunders.
1990’S: THE BEGINNING OF CONTEMPORARY ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC SOUNDS
The first sounds of electronic dance music that current EDM rave fans would recognize are those of techno music, house music, hardcore rave (hardstyle), dub, trance, and drum and bass. In the ‘90’s, electronic dance music was still breaking into the mainstream, and the inclusion of these new subgenres helped propel it into popularity, making EDM a part of the mainstream music industry like never before, especially in Europe. It was then that the rave scene began to grow into what it is today, with night clubs featuring popular and even underground EDM records. Popular songs of the day included the British group Orbital’s highly popular single Chime and their single “Halcyon On and On.”
In the U.S., we were brought “Detroit techno,” or techno that seemed to originate in Detroit in the late ‘80’s and ‘90’s. Detroit techno was pioneered by the “Belleville Three,” including Derrick Mayr, who produced music under the names Mayday and Rhythim is Rhythim. May’s song “Strings of Life” is still widely recognized as a classic house and techno record that has defined the techno genre in the U.S.
FROM POPULAR TO MAINSTREAM: EDM IN THE 2000’S
Electronic dance music, despite its slow start, eventually picked up popularity in the U.S. thanks to international DJs and music producers drawing attention to the genre as well as a techno-pop 1998 album by Madonna, Ray of Light. From there, we began to see producers like TiĂ«sto, Daft Punk and David Guetta, who are still internationally acclaimed EDM musicians. These artists, when once developing a cult following, have made names for themselves within the mainstream music industry and still top the charts. In the early 2000’s, dubstep was also introduced to the U.S. music industry through artists like Skrillex, a Grammy-winning EDM artist with sounds of dubstep, house, trap and more.
Today, EDM is often characterized by remixes and original sound mixes, produced by world-famous DJs like The Chainsmokers, Steve Aoki, Martin Garrix and others, in addition to the ever-relevant Skrillex, David Guetta, Daft Punk and Tiësto. That said, electronic dance music and its subgenres are now used by a large majority of pop and hip-hop artists, including the likes of Coldplay, Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Drake, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Alessia Cara and countless others.
Check out some of the most popular 2017 EDM songs to check out the latest EDM in the industry, including “It Ain’t Me,” by the DJ Kygo and Selena Gomez.

Spoiler for House Music:
Spoiler for acid house:
Spoiler for Progressive House:
Spoiler for Deep House:
Spoiler for Trance:
Spoiler for Techno:
Mottonya: less is more. Coba dengarkan Droplex – Dance dan Daniel Portman – Rock the Funk.
Spoiler for Dubstep:
Knife Party – Centipede
Flux Pavillion – I can’t stop
Mount Kimbie – Carbonated (post-dubstep)
Electro

WHAT IS HARDSTYLE MUSIC?
Hardstyle is an electronic dance music genre with a tempo of 140-150 BPM. It has influences of both hardcore and house music and the beats per minute lie exactly between these two. Several subgenres have developed over the years, such as raw style and terror. The hard sound of the first years are now often referred to as 'early' hardstyle.
Hardstyle is an accessible genre because of all the subgenres. Hardcore, freestyle, euphoric, uptempo or extra raw? There is one for everybody. Most of the time the artists choose to focus on one specific style, but they also often experiment. Leading artists of the euphoric style are for instance Brennan Heart, Noisecontrollers and Wildstylez. Popular hardcore and early hardcore artists are Nosferatu, Angerfist, Mad Dog and The Viper. Leading raw and extra raw artists are Radical Redemption, Warface, Requiem and Delete. Popular freestyle artists are Paul Elstak, Darkraver and Vince.
THE ORIGINS OF HARDSTYLE
In the year 2000 the hardcore genre had reached his peak. This was the call for new sounds and it was loud and clear.
On the 3rd of February 2001, the very first edition of Qlimax took place in a sports center in Amsterdam. Later that month, the very first edition of Qlubtempo was held in the “Hemkade“ in Zaandam. It was the beginning of a new, fresh and hard sound that would grow to become one of the most important genres in the EDM industry, hardstyle.
The first editions of Qlubtempo were a mix between German, Italian and UK hard house records. A little rough at first, but it didn’t last very long until it developed into a complete new sound. In December of 2001, Q-dance sold out the 3rd edition of Qlimax in the Heineken Music Hall, being their first major hardstyle event.
After several successful editions of Qlubtempo and Qlimax, the word hardstyle was born. Q-dance registered the word 'hardstyle' as their brand on the 4th of July 2002.
While Qlubtempo saw its last edition in 2003, Qlimax is still one of Q-dance’s most popular concepts and the biggest indoor hardstyle event in the world.
